This defines the style in which we are living.  These days I would say that it is defined by a simplicity of shapes, whether square or round.  Patterns are subtle and sophisticated and usually of a smaller geometric scale.  It is possible to mix scale but mostly in square stripes and checks rather than floral.  However, like most design rules, these maybe broken by the innovator.  Contemporary can be confused with Modern.  But Modern can be a style of any era where the lines are bold and the colours are often primary and the contrasts bold.
